Zulkarnain Sitompul was born in Medan, on May 21^st 1959. He got his bachelor in law from North Sumatra university on 1983, Master in Law from Southern Methodist University, School of Law, Dallas, Texas on 1992, and on 2002 got Cum laude in Doctor in Law from Magister Program in Law from University of Indonesia.Besides his formal educations he also took courses on United States Legal System in Georgetown Law Center, USA (1991), participating on Negotiating and Financing Investment Agreement (1997), Legal Issues in E-Commerce (2001) and Bank Restructuring and Governance (2004) in International Law Institute, Washington DC, USA.He also writing in some journals such as Jurnal Hukum Bisnis and in other media.

He has published some books, such as Perlindungan Dana Nasabah Bank Suatu Gagasan tentang Pendirian Lembaga Penjamin Simpanan di Indonesia published by Magister Program University of Indonesia (2002), Lembaga Penjamin Simpanan: Substansi dan Permasalahan, Problematika Perbankan: Substansi dan Permasalahan (2005), and Insider Trading: Kejahatan di Pasar Modal (2007) was published by Books Terrace & Library, Bandung.

Right now he is still teaching at Magister of Law University of Indonesia,  Magister of Law in North Sumatera University, and some public university in Jakarta.***
